Trap

By Stephen Gregg

Trap is a horror show, dealing primarily with a horror of the unknown. When designing this show, I wanted to stay away from a classic ‘red for scary’ trope, one that’s further reinforced by the script.

I ended up going with a look inspired by sodium vapor lights. For me they invoked a feeling of being a child and being outside at night, a little uncertain about what was in the next shadow.

The final scene of the show involves a near-blackout, and all the actors eyes glowing red. I collaborated with our props team to design and construct the glowing eyes. I was really happy with the effect we got, watching them switch on one by one. We definitely got some screams from the audience.

Even outside of scenes that were dominated with Sodium Vapor lights, I wanted to keep that feeling of uncertainty. I found removing information, not letting the audience see the cast’s face in certain scenes, was the best way to give a subtlety creepy air to the needed scenes.
