The Birds

By Yvette Nolan

We staged our production of The Birds in the Shenandoah Mountains, right in the area that JMU sits. We did a research visit to Shenandoah National Park, and I was really taken by the quality of light. So cool and uniform.

In this production I tried to really pull from nature. This high mountain feel, the sense there is nothing between you and the light, that it feels cold and sharp and clean were all things I was trying to invoke.

Within the world of the play, there are several songs, tales of history. These let me break from the more strictly realistic, nature inspired world I was working in for the other parts of the play, and into an almost dream world.
